Thoughts on street crossing

Wow – crossing the street is so dangerous I’m surprised I haven’t seen any collisions so far.  Cars don’t stop for pedestrians, cross walk signals don’t exist, and dogs wonder around freely.  It’s especially scary when there’s no stop light, such as right in front of Hospital Del Nino.  To cross that street, you have to wait for a break in traffic closest to you, scamper halfway across the road, then stand awkwardly and uncomfortably in the middle of the road waiting for a break to appear in the other half of traffic.   There’s a police officer to assist (also standing in the middle of the road) but often I feel like he just blows whistles to cars who continue to whiz by.  The streets choke with cars, taxis, and “mini-buses” all pushing their way through.   Craziness!
